The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a national recall for No Name brand beef burgers due to potential E. coli contamination (No Name brand beef burgers recalled across Canada for E. coli risk - National | Globalnews.ca). The recall affects products sold across Canada including in our area: 1.36 kg packages with a best before date of May 5, 2026; no illnesses have been reported, but consumers are advised to discard or return the product. 


 

A citizens' group and the Société de l’Acadie du Nouveau-Brunswick are calling for a commission to study a potential name change for l’Université de Moncton. (SANB, citizen group pushing for commission to study UdeM name change | Telegraph-Journal). The university's board of governors, however, is standing by its 2023 decision not to pursue the change, referencing a report that estimated the cost at approximately $4.5 million.
The City of Moncton was named after Robert Monckton, a British officer who participated in the Acadian expulsion in the 1750s and 1760s.

 

The Town of Riverview is continuing its successful program of replacing old cast iron water pipes with PVC, which has significantly reduced the number of annual water main breaks/ more council news. See (Riverview working to replace old water pipes, council told | Telegraph-Journal).

According to documents filed with regulators, N.B. Power anticipates that power bills will increase by roughly 5% to pay for a new natural gas generating station in Tantramar. The utility also projects a significant energy deficit by 2030. They had considered/ may still be considering a site in Scoudouc for development to meet the demand. According to a report from the New Brunswick Health Council, approximately 2,000 NBers die from preventable causes each year. Lung cancer and heart disease top the list (N.B. news: List of preventable deaths released). Data also shows an increase in deaths from diabetes, COPD, and stroke.  

 

More than 60 New Brunswick arenas are nominated for the Kraft Hockeyville contest, competing for a $250,000 grand prize for rink upgrades and the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season game (NB arenas compete for $250K Kraft Hockeyville prize | Telegraph-Journal). Nominations close on March 1, with the winner scheduled to be announced on April 4.

As Prime Minister Mark Carney visits China, Chinese state media is urging Canada to pursue a foreign policy independent of the United States. The trip aims to revive strained relations and diversify Canadian trade away from the American market.   
 
The PM made a stop on the West Coast before China. Following a productive meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, B.C.'s Coastal First Nations reaffirmed their opposition to any oil pipeline project that would bring tankers to the north coast (B.C. Coastal First Nations say meeting with Carney was ‘productive’, but pipeline position remains | Globalnews.ca). In response, Carney committed to renewing funding for ocean protection and reconciliation, and further measures to strengthen marine safety and conservation.
