A Moncton woman discovered her downtown apartment was struck by nine bullets on the morning of January 31, causing damage to her living room ('Oh my God that's a bullet:' Woman recalls shots fired at her home | Telegraph-Journal). RCMP are investigating. They don't believe it was a targeted attack.

The NB government is not renewing its contract with virtual care provider eVisitNB and has begun negotiations with a new company to take over the service (N.B. government set to cut ties with eVisitNB | Telegraph-Journal). The change is effective after March 31st and will have an impact on ~325,000 patients who have used the platform.

 

Don Monahan, MLA for Arcadia-Butternut Valley-Maple Hills, has officially entered the leadership race for New Brunswick's Progressive Conservative party (N.B. PC MLA enters leadership race becoming 2nd confirmed candidate - New Brunswick | Globalnews.ca). He is the second confirmed candidate, joining Daniel Allain in the contest to replace former premier Blaine Higgs, with a new leader to be chosen in October.

More than 60 New Brunswick arenas began the journey to win the Kraft Hockeyville contest, competing for a $250,000 grand prize for rink upgrades and the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season game (NB arenas compete for $250K Kraft Hockeyville prize | Telegraph-Journal). Nominations close on March 1, with the winner scheduled to be announced on April 4.

  • First Medal: Speedskater Valérie Maltais won Canada's first medal of the Games on the weekend, a bronze in the women's 3,000-metre event. This is her first individual Olympic medal in her fifth Games.
  • Women's Hockey: The Canadian women's hockey team began its gold-medal defence with a game against Switzerland, which proceeded despite a norovirus case on the Swiss team. Canada defeated Switzerland 4-0 Saturday.

Canadian Olympic figure skater Madeline Schizas went viral after emailing her professor to request an extension on a university assignment, citing her competition schedule at the Milan Cortina Games (Schizas gets university assignment extension - National | Globalnews.ca). The McMaster University student later confirmed she was granted the extension, reflecting on the public spotlight that comes with balancing elite athletics and academics.

American skier Lindsey Vonn went down early into her downhill skiing event and had to be airlifted out to hospital. The 41-year-old went into the competition with an injury, but hoped she could still compete. Reports say she received treatment for a broken leg.
