Moncton city council has approved a revised plan for the Bernard Place development on Botsford Street, downsizing the project from 18 storeys to a six-storey, 98-unit building set to begin construction in spring 2026 (Proposed Botsford St. building described as 'monstrosity' | Telegraph-Journal). The new design drew mixed public feedback, with some residents calling it an improvement over the original "monstrosity" while others criticized the building's "clumsy" appearance and the reduction in scale.

Moncton's Homelessness Steering Committee is raising concerns that funding for a daily breakfast program serving up to 100 people is set to run out on December 31 (Council hears report from homelessness steering committee | Telegraph-Journal). While the operator, Harvest House Atlantic, has committed to continuing the service, the committee is urging the city to help secure provincial funding to support the hundreds of residents who rely on daily meal services.

The What Kids Need Moncton Christmas toy drive is experiencing record demand this year, with over 1,750 families registered for assistance, far exceeding last year's numbers (Christmas toy drive sees record need | Telegraph-Journal). The non-profit, which aims to help families who may not qualify for other programs, is now facing a significant shortage of donations, especially for babies and teenagers.

Moncton's long-anticipated "Vision Lands" development has taken a significant step forward after city council approved a subdivision plan for a portion of the area. The initial phase includes creating 11 building lots, new public streets, and setting aside land for a new city park, though a timeline for construction is not yet established. (https://www.cbc.ca/lite/story/9.7017799)

The federal and New Brunswick governments have signed an agreement to streamline environmental impact assessments for major projects, creating a single, coordinated review process. This "one project, one review" approach, the first of its kind in Canada, aims to eliminate duplication and redundancy without weakening the stringency of the environmental oversight. (https://www.cbc.ca/lite/story/9.7018236)

The federal government has hinted that a resolution is near in its dispute with New Brunswick over an estimated $50 to $70 million in provincial revenue lost due to a federal tax break (Ottawa may soon resolve N.B. tax revenue fight). Federal Minister Dominic LeBlanc suggested the compensation will come through other "arrangements" rather than a direct payment, while Premier Susan Holt says she is confident the province will be "kept whole."

A new report from a U.S. Congressional committee warns that a decline in Canadian tourism is negatively impacting American businesses, particularly in border states (Congressional report finds drop in Canadian tourists hurting U.S. businesses | Globalnews.ca). The report, released by Democrats on the Joint Economic Committee, attributes the drop in visitors to the "stark" effects of President Trump's tariff policies.
