We've got 10 weird, odd, fun, notable, not serious things from this week's news. This  is what a weird week.

00:19
Hi friends, I'm Scott. Thank you for checking out What a Weird Week, a show about the odd things that were in the news. And if you want all the stuff we talk about in more detail or you want to get our show notes in that, to shownotes.page,  shownotes.page.  This is our episode for Friday, May the 9th,  2025.

00:41
Number 10 is a new study that is out about gluten and kissing. So perhaps you, perhaps someone you know is gluten intolerant or has some sort of gluten ailment. Perhaps you or someone you know has kissed a person before. Well, apparently, according to the study, they had people eating crackers and kissing and that's kind of, you know, there's more science involved. But basically it was eat crackers and then kiss and...

01:10
I imagine now that I think of it, were lined up for this. Some people were lined up for that study because crackers are delicious. Hey, right, you guys? So what they found was minimal gluten transfer. If you're gluten intolerant and your partner eats a cracker that kisses you without rinsing, minimal gluten transfer occurred. It seems reasonably safe to smooch like crazy. They even had like the test subjects, some of them rinsed, some of them didn't even rinse. They just.

01:39
you know, ate crackers and then started kissing. Kind of gross, but in the name of science they did it. And so it seems like kissing is a, you don't have to settle for a handshake. If you're gluten intolerant, looks as though you can like just make out like crazy. More science there if you click our show notes, shownotes.page. Number nine. This one is from the weird food department. I find this weird. You tell me if this is weird, you guys. Let me know in the comments. By the way, thank you for commenting and

02:08
Liking, following, subscribing, all of that stuff. You can get all our links at shownotes.page. I try to answer. Sometimes I get behind in the answering, but let me know if this one is gross or perfectly normal. For the summertime, the Utz brand of snacks is coming out with lemonade flavored chips. So delicious potato chips, but they taste like lemonade. Now here where I live, East Coast, Canada, we do have some Utz

02:39
I don't think we get utz potato chips,  maybe pretzels. So utz, I don't have a dog in this race and I just think lemonade, just the thought of lemonade flavored chips. I want to be open-minded to snacks. I want to always have room for a new snack in my life, but lemonade flavored chips. I know you did your research and I know there's a reason you came out with lemonade flavored chips.  Maybe life handed you lemons and you were like, well, what do we do with these? Hey.

03:08
Like the old adage, when life hands you lemons, make lemonade flavored chips. Anyway, we link to their press release if you want to check it out. ShowNotes.page. Number eight. This one is the very, very, very long press conference, a world record breaking long press conference. The president of Maldives  gave a nearly 15 hour press conference and that's a world record.  Answering questions, taking a break to have a drink.

03:33
say a prayer and then write back to answering questions from members of the media and also submitted questions from the general public. After a while, I feel like you would run out of questions.  You'd have to dig deep. So God bless you journalists and folks who submitted questions holding our politicians to account about what their favorite color is and whatnot.  The article gets into some other world record press conferences too. The press conference that happened underwater.

04:03
A few like that. Anyway, if you want to read the article, click show notes dot page. Oh, the article also says, like, how do you get members of the media? And I've seen this myself, having worked in the media.  How do you get members of the media to stick around for 15 hours? Well, the key is buried deep in the article where it says food was offered to the journalists. That'll ensure that people show up to your press conference. Food.

04:29
Little trade secret there. Number seven. This one is about music and our brains and what is happening when we enjoy music. The music goes into your ear holes, right? And that's where I'm at that point I'm lost. I don't know anymore what is going on when my brain enjoys music. But this new study that's been published  seems to indicate that we  become the music we love in a way. Our brains sync up, our brains and bodies instinctually sync up with the music.

04:57
It's not that we're hearing the music and we're anticipating the chorus or the predictability of the song. It's more that our brains are syncing up with the music  and we are becoming part of the music. It seems a bit bonkers to me, but I do enjoy music. It's not so much bonkers. It's just way over my head. If you want to read the whole thing, we'll link to it in the show notes. It appears to be good news. Like there'll be opportunities for music  and therapy and helping people through music.

05:27
and a better understanding of how our brains react to music. I'm happy that we're not melting our brains through music. So thank you, science, because my Grammy, at one point my Grammy said, you're melting your brain with that listening to that awful racket. No offense, Grammy, but science has turned a corner on that theory. So that's good news. Number six. This one is a story about the robot uprising and it might be scary for younger kids if  there's a youngster  hearing this.

05:56
Earmuffs, kids. Earmuffs. This one's too scary. I don't want you to fear the future, our future with robots. OK, here's the headline from New York Post. Violent humanoid robot snaps attacks factory workers and wild video went full Terminator. That part just not true. Going full Terminator involves time travel, right? I mean, we can all agree on that. So come on, New York Post, you need to do better. It was a heck of a headline, though, I have to say. This  is about a video.

06:25
from an undisclosed factory in China where a robot seems to go berserk. Either gets switched on or given its prime directive and the arms of this robot, it's a sort of humanoid robot, the arms start swinging like it's gone berserk. And you can see the nearby people are  nervous. To put it lightly, they are nervous that this robot is going to hunt them down.

06:51
Anyway, things get shut down and it would appear no injuries, nothing,  well,  no physical injuries. There's no way anybody who saw that got any sleep that night. Dreaming of the robots going berserk. Like, if you work in that factory now, you're never going to want to be near a robot or walk past a robot or it's classic like, oh no, the robots, it's been shut off. Don't worry. You can walk past this robot. It's it's sleeping.

07:19
It's in deep sleep, deep robot sleep, you know. We've all seen that movie and that robot isn't in deep robot sleep and it's goodnight Irene for  everyone involved. That's what I would worry about if I were one of the people in this factory witnessing this robot go berserk. Anyway, if you want to see the video, we link to it, click shownotes.page. Number five is eat this food for breakfast. Be a super genius later in the day.

07:49
The food is walnuts, you guys. I know some podcasts would be like, stick around to the end and we'll tell you what food, but I'm just going to tell you, I'm saving you time right now. It's walnuts. A study has indicated that having walnuts for breakfast later in the day, you'll have improved reaction time on cognitive tests. You're going to think faster according to the study and memory benefits from walnuts. They seem to show up about six hours after eating the walnuts. So have them for breakfast later in the day, better memory.

08:18
some sort of delayed effect. That's kind of it in a nutshell. Hey, you guys, in a nutshell. Hey,  what even?  Did I have walnuts for breakfast or what? Because I'm on fire. If you want to get into the science of what they think is going on with the walnuts for breakfast deal, you can  read the whole study. We'll link to it in the show notes.  four. This one, maybe you saw this, it got picked up on a lot of the major news channels. The cold case over 60 years old that a detective has solved.

08:47
And it has a happy ending. This involves a lady who went missing 62 years ago from a town in Wisconsin. And a cold case detective looked into it. Good old fashioned detective work. And I believe Ancestry.com was involved and tracked down that was able to find the lady. And the lady is alive and well. Happy, safe and secure is how the story describes the lady. It would seem she wasn't running from the law, perhaps escaping a not  safe situation at home. That's kind of

09:16
Maybe I didn't describe that so well, but anyway, if you want to read the story, the lady just lived under the radar for more than six decades and that case is closed now. Number three.

09:34
So that's a little bit of a video of a cat jumping from one podium to another or one platform to another.  Oscar, the seven year old cat who made headlines for making a giant leap for cat kind Guinness world record. Oscar the cat jumped a distance of eight feet, five inches. That's kind of the whole thing. I mean, maybe you've got a frisky feline who can you think could cover that distance? Maybe you want to look into this, but that is the world record that made headlines this week. Oscar the cat. If you want to see the video.

10:03
Click show notes dot page.  Number two is the fellow in the Philippines who climbed over into the crocodile enclosure. Didn't think the crocodiles at the Philippines Zoo were real and wanted to get a cool photo and then got bitten by a crocodile. So, you know, you hear these stories once in a while. If somebody's trying to get a cool photo for their socials or whatever, and then, you know, they are in danger. And that is what happened here. And they say the crocodile did the classic

10:32
crocodile death roll where the crocodile  grabs on to you gets you in their jaws and then does a twist there to try to incapacitate you So this fellow is  quite lucky got away. I think with 50 stitches, know, so definitely some injuries but was rescued by a zookeeper 50 stitches and a story to tell God bless you zookeepers who have to you know deal with people now not just taking care of the animals making sure none of the monkeys escape but now you're gonna

11:02
Also, Correll people who want to get up close and get those photos. That can't be easy.  Honorable mention. I wanted to circle back on this one because I don't  usually do the lottery stories. I don't know why I just find they're all the same. Like the cat picked my numbers and now I'm a millionaire or I made a mistake, but now I'm a millionaire or Elvis came to me in a dream and gave me the lotto numbers and now I'm a millionaire. This one I found interesting, though. It was actually in the news last week  in North Carolina.

11:31
Over 5,000 people won the pick three, they all picked zero, zero, zero. I thought that was weird. Turns out the number crunchers say whether you pick three digits all the same or whatever, the odds of winning are always one in a thousand. And picking three numbers the same is fairly common too, I guess. I don't play the lotto that often, but that's a strategy where you pick, I guess if the odds of you winning are the same, why not just pick the same number three times? All right, sorry, honorable mention, I'm withdrawing it.

12:00
It's not that interesting. Sorry, you guys. one is the story that was trending all over the world. The young fella in Kentucky, eight year old Liam, who was playing on mom's phone and decided to order some suckers and ordered 70,000 dumb, dumb suckers on Amazon. Mom didn't know they started to arrive and mom was like, what the hey? It's me paraphrasing. And then that's like $4,000  in suckers. Mom got to work calling the bank.

12:27
contacting Amazon, all these different things. And I don't want to be so jaded, but I think this story got picked up by some news  orgs, you know, got broadcast.  And that's when  Amazon said,  you know what, ma'am, you're going to get a refund. I'm glad it worked out. And then mom  changed. think mom is using two factor authentication or something.  Use your fingerprint mom,  so that Liam can order any more suckers.  Something like that.  Mom  and Liam both learned a lesson.

12:57
And the lesson here is  suckers are delicious.  Get order as many as you can when no one's looking because those things are delicious. That's the lesson. Okay, that's it.
