@blaise.gomez12 A new twist in those eerie sightings at Newburgh Brewing Company! Following my exclusive report Friday about strange surveillance footage, local historians uncovered newspaper accounts of a deadly steam boiler explosion in 1867, when the property was part of Washington Iron Works. The blast killed 45-year-old worker Hugh Elwood, who 19th-century newspaper reports say was trapped beneath the wreckage and died gasping for air. Five other workers were seriously injured. Now the owners are wondering whether the tragedy could be connected to a mysterious steam-like shape that appears to form a face with an open mouth — and knives that seem to change positions on their own. They say the brewery has always had good vibes and joke that maybe any lingering spirits just enjoy the beer! What do you think about the strange sightings? Weigh in in the comments and find more on this story at news12.com! 👻 🍺 #hauntings #blaisegomez #localnews #newburghbrewery #paranormal ♬ original sound - blaise.gomez12

It looks like a can of Pringles, but it's an urn. What a weird week. Hi friends, I am Scott. This is What a Weird Week. It's a program where we go back through the news of the week. We pick out the fun stories, the odd ones, the interesting stories, not the serious news. And we count down 10 weird news stories for you. You can get all the show notes and more details on everything. If you go to shownotes.page, that's the show notes page,  show notes.

00:29
dot page at time of recording. It's Friday, October 23rd, 2026.

00:38
Number 10 is, first of all, eye-opening the Chin-Up Champion of the World, World Domination in Chin-Ups. We have a new world record in the headlines. But then also, what the Chin-Up Champion wants to do next. It may cause you to sit down and re-evaluate. The Chin-Up Champ is named Damian Rooney from the United Kingdom, making headlines for doing 499 Chin-Ups in one hour.

01:08
while wearing a 20 pound weight. Which, at first I was like, well 20 pounds, that's not bad. But then, yes it is. It's just, I'm stupid. I am stupid. 20 pounds for 499 chin-ups plus your body weight, that's a lot. And now, the chin-up champ wants to do the most chin-ups in 24 hours. That's the next goal, training for that. An entire day of chin-ups.

01:38
which could be somewhere around 10,000. To learn about this record on a day where I dropped my pen and it was going to take too much effort to pick it up. So I went and got a new pen. On a day like that, I don't know if you've ever had those kind of days, but I'm learning about this chin-up champion on a day where I abandoned my pen. I used to professionally in mixed martial arts for around 12 years or so. I was known as Damien the Rage Rooney.

02:08
The mental fortitude and resilience you need in fights is very useful when you're doing things like this. Sometimes these records make me feel bad about myself. But congratulations Damien. Chin up King.

02:23
Number nine is a haunting story, not one that will haunt you probably, but it's about a haunting. And the headline from Hudson Valley News is ghosts in the kitchen?  Question mark.  Newburgh Brewery owner shares eerie security footage. I'm going to be honest with you. I don't think this would have made headlines except for the fact it's Halloween time. This is a brewery in Newburgh, New York, United States of America. Apparently it's haunted.

02:52
When you read the article, the footage shared with the news organization is like a couple years old or something. But making headlines now. And then if you don't have a chance to click, I'll link to all of it. They do have some still images from the security cam. One of them, the one you first encounter, which I assume you'd serve up your best photo right off the top. I'm not a journalist, but it's a still image of the kitchen, the brewery kitchen.

03:23
And then there's a circle, which I assume is circling something supernatural, but I can't see anything. It's just a still image. Picture a kitchen in black and white with a red circle, which may or may not indicate like maybe I think perhaps there's a stain on the floor. I'm a true believer in all that stuff. I just I don't see it. They talk about seeing eyes, creepy eyes, creepy teeth,  somebody in overalls.

03:53
Overalls.  The haunted overalls.

03:59
Number eight is a political story and we don't usually talk politics. So just wanted to give you a heads up on that. This is about the fellow named Brady running for city council in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada,  planet earth.  Brady's campaign was unusual in that his sign said things like, I barely want to do this and I'm just trying to pay my rent.

04:28
And that one even had City Council misspelled. That poster, he was running for City Council. It worked. Assuming Brady really did want to get elected, it worked. He got elected. Now, according to his own sign, he barely wanted to get elected. Anyway, he's elected. Way to go, Brady. Or, sorry, Brady. Now you got to do it. I don't know what the right vibe is here. Seems like a funny fellow, Brady.

04:58
It kinda looks like Jason Bateman to me, but I have face blindness.  We link to an article you can read. Perhaps you aspire to be a politician who speaks the truth. Well, you can read Brady's website where he says things like, do I enjoy politics? No. Do I know what I'm doing? No. But am I qualified? Also no.

05:22
Pretty good.

05:27
Number seven is the Halloween times promotion or publicity stunt from Pringles, the potato chip brand, where you can win an urn to put ashes in that looks like a Pringles can. It's made out of metal alloy, but it looks like a Pringles can fashioned after a Pringles can. And you can win that urn and also a 200 year supply of Pringles.  But heads up, the contest is over. At time of recording, we don't know who won the contest.

05:57
but the window for this contest wrapped up just as we were recording the episode. They say something in their marketing about the inventor of Pringles. I thought this was an urban legend. Dead facts. Did you know that the man who invented the Pringles can is actually buried in one? His name is Fred Bauer and he told his kids when I die, throw some of my ashes in a Pringles can. That's how I want to be remembered. That's from Facebook. Dead facts. We'll link to that in the show notes. I didn't know that was

06:27
I thought it was one of those things people said I guess it's true and Pringles is leaning into their history by now offering up and earn to one lucky contest winner number six is the sleep race an actual competition with competitive sleepers Which occurred in Japan? It's a race to get to sleep. It seems a bit fishy whatever because can't you fake being asleep? but everybody all the competitors are hooked up to

06:57
some sort of sleep monitor. This competition is put on by a mattress company, but competitive sleepers try to get the sleep fast and they try to sleep soundly. Those are the two factors to win this contest and it's pretty serious prize money. The top prize is 14, the equivalent of 14,000 American dollars. I just don't know how you get to be a competitive sleeper.

07:25
It really is living the dream. I know that's a terrible pun, but it really is. Being a competitive sleeper is living the dream.

07:39
Number five is also a sleep story. Researchers named the top exercise to help you sleep.  And I just naturally assumed it'd be sleepwalking. Hey,  sleepwalking, exercise for sleeping. I'm just gonna tell you what it is, yoga. So if you have trouble sleeping and you're able to try yoga, according to the research, it is the number one exercise to promote better sleep. A close second is walking.

08:08
This is based on a meta-analysis by researchers at a university.  And my understanding of a meta-analysis is you don't do the study, you look at other studies and see what kind of data you can get out of that. It's nice when someone else digs through the data for you and tells you the top line stuff. And in this case, yoga ranked first among exercises to help you sleep better.

08:40
Number four is what is secretly happening during video calls or whatever you refer to them as when you have to meet with everybody at work, you're working remotely, you're teleconferencing, whatever you call it.  So secretly, according to a survey, 2000 people studied, this is United States of America. Some people are cooking,  eating,  cooking,  shut off the camera, bring your laptop into the bathroom with you, that is one.

09:09
Also, quite a number of people have fallen asleep during a video call. You know when you see somebody and they're just out of frame and you're like, they haven't moved for a while. Well, I think we have our answer. What's going on there? They have fallen asleep. Who wouldn't fall asleep? You've been busy cooking and exercising during the call already. You're tired at that point. One interesting thing I will link to this in the show notes or you can click show notes dot page.

09:37
They break it down by age groups and millennials. So if you are like 35 ish and under, you're way more likely to be cooking during a call or exercising during or falling asleep during a call. That's according to this study. That's not my own personal opinion. Having worked with a number of different generations, I can say everybody hates these calls.

10:05
Number three is just amazing. It's an amazing story. It blends nature,  terrifying creatures,  history, historical figures, Amelia Earhart, a mystery, all of this combined. And it's kind of under the radar. It's not getting as much coverage as some other stories. I am fascinated by this one. Here's the report from Fox News. On the brink of solving the disappearance of Amelia Earhart.

10:33
a mysterious satellite image leading a team of experts to a deserted island in the South Pacific. Dana, it turns out one of the biggest challenges in trying to find out what exactly happened to the famous aviator Amelia Earhart is something called a coconut crab. They are flesh eating crustaceans. The only inhabitants of this island are so-called coconut crabs, which are said to occasionally grow to three feet. And by the way, they're carnivores when they want to be. So I wouldn't want to

11:02
Encounter one. So just to recap You have researchers trying to solve the mystery of the disappearance of Amelia Earhart famed historical figure Aviator they see something will link to the photo something suspicious no something of interest in a satellite image and they decide to go to there and Then they realize they cannot stay on the island because giant crabs Will harass them

11:32
So they have to stay on the boat. And then I guess every morning go to the island and continue their investigation. This one is fascinating. If you want to read the whole thing, I will link to it. Click show notes dot page.

11:49
Number two is a friendly reminder from an e-bike company in the United Kingdom. Please do not use our bikes for jousting. You've heard of line bikes.  Maybe you've heard of jousting. But have you heard of line bike jousting? Hundreds of people gathered in East London to watch what is possibly the world's first ever jousting match on rented e-bikes. I will link to that full video that's from DW Rev on the YouTubes.

12:15
But the gist of it, I hadn't heard of Lime Bikes. I don't think they have them where I'm at here on the east coast of Canada, but I guess a famous e-bike company. The videos went viral. They're fascinating to watch. Jousting. I could see why jousting caught on back in the day. I don't know my history so much, but I think I finally get it. If you don't have a chance to click and watch the video, I'll just describe what's going on. E-bikes headed towards one another, driving both e-bikes.

12:44
a couple of dudes dressed like a knight carrying a jousting pole? that what they're called? Jouster. Is it a jouster?  Anyway, and they just joust. They just get to the jousting. It's quite fascinating, but it is dangerous. And Limebikes has said, hey, how about not that? That's me paraphrasing.

13:13
Honorable mention.  This week an honorable mention to these folks.  They are celebrating a very long train, a world record long train. This is in South Africa where a train of 696 cars has set a world record as the longest train. That train is 4.7 miles long.  Imagine.

13:42
You're at a railroad crossing waiting for a train to pass. Perhaps you're running late. And you're like, come on train,  any day. And it turns out to be 4.7 miles long. That would be hilarious. Well, frustrating for you, hilarious for the rest of us. How about this? Imagine your enemy is at the railroad crossing and they have to wait through a 4.7 miles long train. There, that's better.

14:12
It's so nice when your enemies have to suffer inconvenience.

14:21
number one is the cornfield mystery, an object that fell to the earth from the sky and landed in a cornfield in Minnesota, United States of America, planet earth. They believe it's space debris,  not alien origin made from human beings. Here's a bit of the video posted by People Magazine. We'll link to this in the show notes. Prompting an investigation by state and federal agencies.

14:47
Experts suspect it came from the upper stage of a Chinese rocket launched in mid-September.  An official explanation was still pending and the debris reportedly lay undetected for about six weeks.  Authorities determined the incident posed no danger to the public. That's the part that gets me a little bit like, no danger to the public. What if it landed on you, 11 feet across? And look, I'm not a scientist. I'm not a doctor of medicine.

15:17
But if that 11 feet across metallic space debris object fell on you I'm gonna say it poses a threat But no injuries reported. That's good. And you know what else? I think I would make a corn maze around it. Like when we'll link to the photo when you see it It's surrounded by corn. Let's make a space debris corn maze And see if you can find your way to the space debris. I feel like you'd sell a lot of tickets to your corn maze

15:46
Big shout out to you folks working hard at the corn maze. We are full on corn maze season. That is going to be all she wrote for this week's What a Weird Week show, our look back at the news of the week. The weird ones, the fun ones, the odd stories. You can get everything we talk about in more detail on the show notes page, which is show notes dot page. We're back on Friday with 10 more weird things from the news on What a Weird Week.
