There was a tragic accident on Route 16 in Melrose, NB yesterday. An ambulance collided with a transport truck. Three people from PEI who were in the ambulance, (two paramedics and a passenger) died in the crash. Melrose, NB is near Confederation Bridge. The collision is under investigation.
A group that's against a natural gas and diesel-fired power plant planned for the Tantramar area will be challenging the approval of that gas plant in court. The Protect the Chignecto Isthmus Coalition is in favor of cleaner energy alternatives like a battery system . (my paraphrase). This challenge is expected to go before the Court of Appeal on Sept 15th.
NB Power has said the plant will be needed for times when electricity demand is too high. A deal to build and operate the plant has been signed with the US company ProEnergy.
Even though the power plant deal has been signed, it still has to pass an Environmental Impact Assessment and requires the consent of Indigenous leaders.
