The proposed plant is facing opposition from the local council and environmental groups, who have raised concerns about its carbon emissions and potential impact on well water and wildlife.

The New Brunswick government is defending its choice of the Sackville area for a proposed natural gas power plant, stating it is the quickest and most cost-effective option to prevent a projected electricity shortfall by 2028 (Province says Sackville-area best option for proposed power plant). However, the project faces strong opposition from local residents and the Tantramar council, who cite significant concerns about public health, environmental impact, and a lack of community consultation.

Gas prices in New Brunswick dropped by 7.9 cents over the weekend after the Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) made an early adjustment to the fuel pricing formula (Gas drops 7.9 cents in New Brunswick). The change was prompted by a new government regulation that switched the benchmark price to the cheaper E10 gasoline blend, delivering savings that the government had previously attempted to achieve through other means.

Shediac Mayor Roger Caissie has announced that he will not seek re-election in the May 2026 municipal elections, though he intends to complete his current term (Shediac Mayor won't seek re-election in 2026 | Telegraph-Journal). After seven years as mayor and 14 years on council, Caissie cited the town's significant growth, major infrastructure projects, and progress toward becoming a net-zero municipality as key accomplishments.

Eleanor W. Graham Middle School in Rexton will remain closed for a second day on Tuesday due to online threats that are currently under police investigation (Police investigating threats toward Rexton middle school | Telegraph-Journal). New Brunswick’s Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station has returned to service after a five-month maintenance outage that was extended by two weeks due to an unexpected turbine repair (N.B. news: Point Lepreau back online after outage). A new report from a U.S. Congressional committee warns that a decline in Canadian tourism is negatively impacting American businesses, particularly in border states (Congressional report finds drop in Canadian tourists hurting U.S. businesses | Globalnews.ca). The report, released by Democrats on the Joint Economic Committee, attributes the drop in visitors to the "stark" effects of President Trump's tariff policies.
