Today (June 5th) in 1882, one of the greatest inventions of modern times was patented.
No exaggeration when I say it changed travel forever! Travelers still use a form of this every day.
On June 5, 1882, John Mitchell Lyons got the patent for "Improvements in Baggage Checks and Coupon Tickets"
He worked for the railway in Moncton (NB, Canada, Planet Earth) and he came up with the gold standard in luggage tracking and identification; the baggage check or luggage tag that rips in two with one half attaching to the luggage, and the other half going to the traveler. (Both halves had route information and a number to make it easy to pick up your luggage when you arrived at your destination.)
More: Moncton in 1882 was the head office of the Intercolonial Railway of Canada... kind of a big deal in the railway.
