Ten fun things from this week's news Things you might have missed when you hit snooze What a weird week, your favorite weird news show
00:21
This is like crazy. We're really weird. They're big. What's out of my trash? Friends, I'm Scott. is what a weird week where we count down 10 of the weird odd interesting things from the news some fun stuff here not serious news We get her all done in about 15 minutes. You can get everything we talked about it show notes page show notes page number 10. All right number 10 is the Alicella gigantea which
00:51
Sounds like a delicious dish, perhaps. It does to me. But it is a giant ocean bug. Is how I would describe it. In the article it's referred to as a supergiant crustacean. It's about as long as a ruler, about a foot long. And it dwells on the ocean floor. But it looks like a bug. Like a giant version of a bug you would see if you flip over a rock. So, you know, terrifying. And anyway, this article refers to
01:19
What they thought was a rare supergiant crustacean perhaps now not being rare, but exactly the opposite. They think perhaps our ocean floor is teeming with this supergiant crustacean, the Alicella gigantea. It kind of boils down to, I'm not a scientist, but I would summarize it this way. We weren't looking in the right places. And when we looked in other places and there and we found more of these what they thought was super rare giant ocean bugs, then as new data came in, they were like, oh,
01:49
Maybe there's a lot of these things. Anyway, if you want to see a photo, click the show notes, show notes that page. Number nine. OK, number nine is another scary nature story. This one, I don't want to make light of it. I will say that at time of recording, everything has settled down. We're going to talk about one of the world's most active volcanoes, the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, the island of Hawaii. It shot lava jets a thousand feet into the air this week and made headlines.
02:15
But then I guess after about six hours, so it started the rumbling and given all the signs of, I don't really understand volcano life there because I'm on the East coast of Canada and we are 99.9 % volcano free here. But the Kilauea was giving all the signs that something was going to happen. And then for about six hours, this happened. At its pinnacle, it was shooting lava jets a thousand feet into the air. So almost as tall as the Eiffel Tower. Imagine the Eiffel Tower in the air, except now it's lava.
02:45
That was Kilauea earlier this week. Volcano researchers and enthusiasts and alarmists, a lot of people were talking about it was making headlines earlier this week in certain communities online. Kilauea, thousand foot lava jets. That's a lot. That's that's a lot of feed of lava. Number eight. It looks like exposure to daylight boosts our immune system. You guys, a study made headlines this week and one of the things they found was we believe exposure to daylight is good for you.
03:13
That's sort of, you know what? I could go on a deeper dive on that, but I feel like I summed it up. I think, you know what? I think we're good. Daylight. Good. Number seven. Number seven is a fun tattoo story. A Swiss lady got a barcode tattoo. It's the barcode from a Red Bull can. The energy drink because she loves Red Bull so much. So she got the barcode tattooed on her arm and she says it scans even. Can you imagine? I don't know if where you're at here in the East Coast of Canada, a lot of places now you can
03:43
scan yourself out. You could do your own checkout, right? And sometimes you ring the wrong thing or you ring it twice and then you have to call for a clerk and that clerk is way too busy to be dealing with you. And they're like, you can tell they're disappointed. Oh, sir, you shouldn't be at the self checkout. You don't know what you're doing. And I know that. I do know that. I feel that shame. Anyway, imagine if you had a barcode on your arm and you kept accidentally scanning your arm.
04:12
Every time you had to call the clerk over to void that. I need you to void my arm again. Anyway, if you want to see the tattoo, we'll put a photo in the show notes. Number six. Number six is this lady. Attempting kiss was a bit crazy. Maybe I am a little crazy too in a good way. I practiced long distance walking only four times, but I walk it on the globe almost every day for fun. So that is Jasmin from Finland.
04:41
who broke a world record, farthest distance walking on a rolling globe. I would say a ball. It's about the size of one of those exercise balls, you know. I don't think it's an exercise ball because it doesn't seem to have as much give, but she is walking on top of a ball and she walked 3,600 feet and something. So that's about 10 football fields. Like you or I would be walking down the street, except she's on top of a giant ball.
05:11
And that is what it just seems like it makes her so happy. A delightful story. The world record for walking on a ball. Number five terrifying robot uprising story, except it's not. It's not at all, you guys. You done been click baited because first of all, it's not a robot. It's a robot. R.O.W. B.O.T. Like for rowing. And it's not an actual physical robot that is going to row you out to the ocean somewhere and then
05:41
swim back to shore and leave you there as part of the grand scheme of robots taking over. It's not that, you guys. Just to repeat, it's not that. It is a virtual competitor, a rowing fitness company that has this rowing, virtual rowing game. Now there's a robot that will race you and just make the exercising more fun. That's kind of it. I mean, I left out some of the details, but
06:07
If you are a rowing enthusiast or you enjoy fitness games, click the thing and do a deep dive on that story. four. You guys, I'm disappointed in that one. Editing team, leave it in because I don't want to make more work for you. But that story wasn't weird or odd or interesting. I thought it was going to be, I thought it was going to be about robots that actually rode a boat. That would be kind of cool. But instead it was just a video game story and I promise we'll do better. We're going to do better.
06:37
Like this one. Number four. The fellow from Oregon who quit his job had enough of, you know, that life and decided I'm quitting my job. I'm going to sail a boat to Hawaii with my cat, Phoenix. So Oliver and Phoenix did that and a lot of followers on social media. So by the time Oliver and Phoenix got to Hawaii, they received a hero's welcome. Dignitaries met with Oliver and Phoenix and fans were cheering.
07:07
Just because, you know, it's kind of like a folk hero situation where somebody did what we've all dreamed of doing, telling our boss how we really feel and going to a sunny tropical place. Oliver did that. And that is an uplifting story for this week. Number three is the story of how in Japan they're cracking down on cutesy baby names. Don't get too inventive with your baby name. There is baby name reform happening in Japan.
07:36
Authorities are cracking down because somebody ruined it for everyone. You want to have you want to give your baby a cute name. You want to, you know, be creative, whatever. And then somebody named their baby Pikachu, which whatever floats your boat, as far as I'm concerned. But there were too many Pikachus and things like that going around. Japanese authorities were like, let's pump the brakes on this Pikachu business. And so that is what is happening. There are some new rules. Parents must specify how.
08:04
You pronounce your child's name, register that child's name, and then a government official will review proposed names. And if they're too flashy, sorry, we're going to need another name. Now, how did we get to here? I'll let you do a deep dive on that. You maybe want to be outraged at this story or perhaps you find it amusing or perhaps you're just looking for an unusual baby name yourself. And where you live, you're still allowed to go hog wild on baby names.
08:33
Well, there are a few in the article you might want to check out. Click show notes dot page. Number two. This one's scary. You guys, I to me, I don't know. How do you feel about haunted dolls? They terrify me. Are you OK with them? You and I are different. So this story is the Internet panic over the haunted Annabelle doll that went missing. Didn't really go missing, you guys. But for a while, the Internet thought the haunted Annabelle doll. And if you're unfamiliar, there is a doll named Annabelle.
09:02
at a museum for scary things. The doll is said to be haunted and people will tell you stories about things the doll did. And then they made scary movies about the doll. And that is the story of Annabelle. So anyway, on the Internet, on the social medias, people started circulating that the Annabelle doll was missing. And, you know, that freaks people out because it's haunted. It's cursed.
09:29
Where is it? We need to know where that thing is. We need to get it back inside its lead case. Then the internet was like, oh, the Annabelle doll goes missing and then all these bad things start happening. Is that a coincidence? Yes, it was a coincidence because the Annabelle doll did show up again. The Annabelle doll was back at the scary museum. So that's kind of the story. It was a, it burned fast. It burned hot. It was scary. It involved a haunted doll. Everything's back to norm.
09:59
Honorable mention, mention. Want to circle back to the Weenie 500. We have the results. Last week we talked about it a bit. Looking forward to the Weenie 500 where the Oscar Mayer Wiener mobiles all raced ahead of the Indy 500 race. So the checkered flag and the trophy went to Slaw Dog representing the Southeast United States. Slaw Dog beat Chi Dog from Chicago. They say it was close. The margin was about half a bun. So congratulations Slaw Dog.
10:27
winner of the first ever Weenie 500. Honorable mention again. Scientists made headlines this week. They have developed contact lenses that provide supervision. Not supervision. Not like the contact lenses will keep an eye on your children or something like that. Not supervision, but vision that is super. So just a couple of things about these contact lenses, scientists.
10:52
say they will provide night vision and they don't need a power source like night vision goggles you gotta you know have those things powered while these contact lenses you don't need a power source also i'm not a scientist so i won't get into the details of it but polymers and nanoparticles are mentioned in the article so if that kind of gets you all fired up nanoparticles and polymers baby one more honorable
11:20
Honorable Mention. Just one more before we get to the number one story of the week. This honorable mention is about a fellow in Quebec, Canada, North America, planet Earth, who made headlines this week introducing a musical instrument called the guitardian, which is a guitar and an accordion. We'll put a link to the thing if you want to hear what it sounds like though. Here's a bit of it.
11:50
So yeah, that's a Gatardian. Number one. Hey, number one, Florida neighborhood living in terror because Angry Duck. This one involves you poor folks in Cape Coral, Florida, United States of America. You've got a mean duck in your neighborhood. The duck has already sent one to hospital. This is a bitey duck, an aggressive duck. People have been chased. The person who went to the hospital, this is their quote from the article.
12:18
I had my eyes closed. All of a sudden I felt a jab on my hand and it was bleeding. It was the duck you guys. The duck bit this poor person who had their eyes closed. It's a bit of a thing you guys. They contacted wildlife officials. The duck is protected by federal law. They can get rid of it. They can move it. But they have to be careful how they do it. There's only certain ways. Most people are just keeping their distance. That duck is...
12:46
Neighbors say one uninvited guest is causing chaos on their street in Cape Coral and it's ruffling more than just feathers. This Muscovy duck, not exactly a friendly visitor, neighbors say it's been biting them, chasing them, even sent a person to the hospital. That's a little bit of the News 6 report, which is headlined, Duck terrorizes neighbors in Florida, one sent to hospital. I mean, birds are scary generally, don't you think? When you get one chasing you around your own neighborhood.
13:16
I don't know. I wanted to end on a happier note, but we'll keep an eye on this one and hopefully that duck will just settle down. Can't we all get along duck? Hey, that's that. Thanks for checking out. What a weird week. You can get everything we talked about in more detail. If you go to our show notes page, show notes dot page. I appreciate when you rate and review, reach out if you want to all our contact links and everything are there at show notes dot page. We'll catch you next week.
